Marguerite Mae “Rita” Longsine, 94 years of age, of Oxford, Nebraska, died on Thursday, March 25, 2021, at her home in Oxford. Rita was born on August 14, 1926, the only daughter of Arden and Violet D. (Peterson) Sheneman, in Harlan County, Nebraska, near Carter, Nebraska. Rita received her education from Oxford High School, graduating at 16 years old, with the class of 1942. She was proud to have never missed a day of school. She pursued higher education from Minnesota and then UNMC in Omaha, Nebraska.
On November 24, 1945, Rita was united in marriage to Robert E. Longsine, following his discharge from the United States Army Air Force. Their marriage had to be kept a secret so Rita could finish her RN schooling. The couple made their home in Stamford, where they raised three daughters: Sherryl, Cindy, and Patti. In 1959, they moved to Arapahoe, and then moved to Omaha in 1969. The couple returned to Oxford in 1981.
She was a member of Chapter C.E. PEO, the Order of the Eastern Star, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and many other organizations. Rita enjoyed serving others with love.
As a nurse, she served in many areas: nursing supervisor, floor nurse, wrote policies and procedures (wash your hands!), and Supervisor of Radiology at UNMC. She served on the Faculty and Administration of Radiation Therapy at UNMC but, retired in 1989 to care for her husband, who suffered from ALS.
Rita was always concerned for her family, for education, and food availability for all. The world was changed because of the lives Rita has touched.
Rita was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Robert Longsine on October 13, 1998; granddaughter, Tara Lee Reiman on August 19, 2006; and son-in-law, Paul Larson on August 28, 2014.
Rita is survived by her three daughters, Sherryl L. Larson of Kalamazoo, Michigan; Cindy S. Haussler and her husband, Scott of rural Arapahoe; and Patti L. Walton of Lincoln, Nebraska; four grandchildren: Chickie; Seth; Jon; and Tyler; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; along with a host of extended family and friends.
There will be no visitation or memorial book signing. The family is honoring Rita’s wish for cremation.
A memorial has been established in Rita’s honor, and kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
The family asks that you do not fact check the dates in Rita’s obituary.
