BERTRAND – Elm Creek forced three turnovers, dominated the time of possession and improved to 2-0 on the season after defeating Bertrand 44-32 Friday afternoon.
The Buffaloes grabbed the lead early after a 12 play, five minute opening drive that ended in a one yard rushing touchdown from Carter Erickson. On the following drive, Bertrand would give the ball back to Elm Creek after Owen Kaps threw an interception to Trent Watkins. The Buffaloes couldn’t score off the takeaway.
Elm Creek would extend the lead early in the second period on another lengthy drive of over six minutes that was capped off on a one yard touchdown run by Beau Knapp. The Vikings would answer four minutes later on an 11 yard touchdown pass from Kaps to Adan Gonzalez to make it a 10 point deficit at halftime.
The third quarter would start the same as the previous two with Elm Creek marching down the field for a six yard touchdown from Knapp. It would be the first of three straight scores for the Buffaloes. The defense would flex their muscles as Kade Sindt snatched a throw from Kaps for the interception and returned it 50 yards for the defensive touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, Bertrand fumbled the ball at the one and Watkins recovered in the endzone for a Buffalo touchdown the grow the lead to 31 points.
Bertrand would climb back in the game in the fourth after Knapp threw a pick to Kaps that then resulted in a touchdown on a seven yard pass from Kaps to Gonzalez. The next Bertrand drive would result in a five yard score from Kaps. However, Elm Creek would run down the time and score with over a minute left to play on a 23 yard run from Erickson to make a 20 point game. Bertrand found the endzone one final time on a late one yard touchdown from Kayden Hatfield from one yard out.
With the loss, Bertrand falls to 1-1 while Elm Creek stayed undefeated at 2-0.
