Gothenburg sinks Clippers, advance to first state semifinals

LINCOLN – The Gothenburg Swedes advanced to their first state semifinal match in school history after defeating Malcolm in four sets 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20 in the first round of the C1 state tournament on Thursday.

The entire match was tight with no team holding a double digit lead. The Swedes used a balanced attack and strong defense to hold off Malcolm. Gothenburg also thrived from the service line, finishing with 10 ace serves.

Clara Evert led Gothenburg with 12 kills and three ace serves. Kara Waskowiak chipped in nine kills. Madison Smith finished with eight kills and Taryn O’Hare had seven kills and three ace serves, all three coming in the fourth set. Halle Dolliver led Malcolm with 22 kills and Diamond Sedlak finished with 15 kills in the losing effort.

Gothenburg improves to 32-3 and will play top seed North Bend Central in the state semifinals at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. Listen to the match on KAMI and krvn.com. Malcolm ends the year at 31-3.
