Gothenburg smacks two home runs in victory over Haymakers

COZAD – Two home runs and a dominant pitching effort in the circle gave Gothenburg a 4-1 win over Cozad Thursday. The win was the first for the Swedes over Cozad since Oct. 1, 2015, ending a 13 game losing steak.

Hannah Devlin set the tone early for Gothenburg, hitting a solo home run on the second pitch of the game. Devlin also got the start in the circle and retired the first 10 Haymaker batters she saw including striking out the first eight batters. While she was dealing in the circle, Taysia Holbein hit a three run home run in the second inning to give the Swedes a four run lead.

Cozad would finally crack through in the fourth inning with an infield single off the bat of Kiley Porter. She would come around to score in the inning on an error. It would be the only run the Haymakers would score. Cozad would only muster one more hit throughout the game.

Devlin pitched a complete game allowing only two hits, no earned runs, no walks and struck out 13 in getting the win. She also scored two runs along with her home run. Madi Sayer picked up the loss for Cozad after pitching an inning and a third, allowing four runs, three earned, two walks and one strike out. Taylor Howell pitched in relief of Sayer and was terrific only allowing two hits, no runs, walked one and struck out four.

Cozad dropped to 2-2 and will play in the Blair Invite on Saturday. With the win, Gothenburg improved to 4-1 and host a triangular on Friday.
