Gregory Christian Lauby, 76, of Wymore

Gregory Christian Lauby, 76, of Wymore passed away on January 25, 2023 at Bryan East Medical Center in Lincoln after a battle with cancer. He was born on September 4, 1947 to Chris and Leota Mae (Wheeler) Lauby of Lexington, the first of 10 children.

Greg grew up on the family farm. He attended Dist. 37 country elementary school. He graduated from Lexington St. Ann’s High School in 1965. He graduated from Regis College in Denver in 1969 with a degree in sociology. In college, he was the editor ofan award-winning yearbook and assistant editor of the Regis Literary Magazine while also working as a student advisor at a dormitory, overseeing student life and safety. He was named the college’s “man of the year” among students in his senior year.

He then served two years in the U.S. Army. After the military, he studied at the University of Nebraska College of Law in Lincoln and graduated in 1975. After obtaining his law license he worked with Ralph A. Smith Law Office in Omaha as a criminal defense attorney.

In 1976, he returned to the family farm, managing crops and a cow herd for 15 years, excelling in the production of bred heifers and married Maureen Volkman. Greg practiced law from 1990 to 2004, primarily as a defense attorney in Lexington, as well as a year and a half as deputy county attorney in Cheyenne County, Nebraska. Throughout his life, he was a tireless advocate of compassion, assistance, and justice for others – particularly the disadvantaged and downtrodden.

Survivors include his brothers, Roy (Gretchen) Lauby of Wymore, George Lauby of North Platte, Will (Stacey) Lauby of Kearney, and Paul (Sue) Lauby of Lexington; sisters, Adrienne (Shelly) of Cotati, California, Elizabeth (Rex) of Montrose, Colorado, and Cecilia (Walt) Fick of Kearney; brother-in-law, Paul Powell; as well as dozens of nieces and nephews and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joe; and sister, Veronica.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 4th at the Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, 505 N. 9th St. in Wymore. The service will be livestreamed on the funeral home’s YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/@laughlin-hoevet). Memories from friends and family will be read and shared in a video at the service,please send to samantha@ghchapel.com. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM with the family greeting relatives and friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greg Lauby Memorial Fund for future designation.
