Lopers Set School Record

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney women’s golf team shot a 36-hole team record of 582 (290-292), super senior Faviola Gonzalez broke her own 36-hole school mark with a 141 and then won a playoff to earn medalist honors Wednesday at the Central Region Preview in Blue Springs, Mo. The 16-team event was held at the par 72 Adams Pointe G.C. (5,910 yards). This early season tournament features some of the top teams in the Central Region and a strong showing helps build a resume for NCAA consideration in the spring. 2022 Fall Preview Runners UpUNK was the first-round leader thanks to tying the 18-hole team record of 290 and finished runner up as Henderson (Ark.) State managed a 281 today to finish with a 573. Augustana (589), Northeastern State (590) and Arkansas-Monticello (599) were under 600 as well.

The previous 36-hole Loper standard was a 589 at the Grace Shin Memorial (Edmond, Okla.) in the fall of 2021 (299-290). Gonzalez (Puerto Rico) fired a 68 today, one off her own 18-hole record, to shoot up six spots on the leaderboard and tie Chiara Sturaro of UAM with a 3-under 141. She had four birdies on the back nine and two on the front and then won a one-hole playoff with Sturaro to be the medalist. Gonzalez got a par on the first hole with Sturaro carding a bogey. Also coming in the top 15 was Kansas sophomore Brooke King (T-8th/145; 70-75) and Kansas junior Allison Comer (T-14th/148; 77-71). This is King’s best 18 and 36-hole efforts with Comer having her low 18-hole score. She had 15 pars and two birdies today with King carding eight birdies over the two days. Next, Colombian sophomore Juliana Botero Molina tied for 24th (151; 70-81) and Arizona senior Paige Lucero tied for 31st (155; 77-78). Botero Molina records a 70 for the second time in college and it included four birdies and 13 pars. Finally, playing as an individual was Arizona junior Sophia Coleman (T-47th; 159; 77-82). UNK heads to Hays, Kan., for the MIAA Fall Preview on Sept. 26-27.
