Minden spoils senior night in Cozad

COZAD- The Minden Whippets used a big first half to win big over Cozad on senior night in the regular season finale. After being up 28-0 at the half, Minden held on in the second half to win 34-18.

It was a fast start for the Whippets. They controlled the first half, almost pushing the score to running clock time. Senior Rylan Holsten got the scoring going early for the Whippets, which capped off a 98 yard opening drive for Minden. The Whippets were also helped out by two defensive pick sixes. Junior Bronson Glanzer and senior Braiden Schroder were both able to pick off the Haymakers and take it to the house. With three second left in the first half, senior quarterback Carter Harsin fired a touchdown pass to junior Jake Ryan as time expired from three yards out to put Minden up 28-0 at the half.

Coming out of the break, it seemed as if all the momentum was with Minden. Cozad was able to answer though, scoring first in the third quarter on a screen pass that went 32 yards to the house by junior Dreu White. On the ensuing drive though, Minden was able to answer right back with another rushing touchdown from Holsten. Minden led it 34-6 after three quarters.

Cozad continued to fight though. A rushing touchdown by sophomore quarterback Noah Shoemaker and a passing touchdown to senior Isaac White cut the lead to 16 points, a two possession game. Cozad was able to get the ball back, and moved the ball inside the Minden thirty with the help of some penalties by the Whippets. With three minutes left in the game though, Cozad failed to convert a fourth down, Minden picked up a first down, and took a couple knees to win it 34-18.

For Cozad, they out gained Minden on the evening, with 281 total yards, 139 on the ground and 142 yards through the air. Shoemaker finished 10-20 with 142 yards, one touchdown and one interception, also with 40 yards on the ground. Dreu White also had 58 yards on the ground.

For Minden, they finished with 257 yards of offense, 188 on the ground, and 69 passing yards. Holsten finished with 13 carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Harsin went 6-12 for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Cozad finished the year at 3-6, while Minden finishes the regular season at 6-3. Minden will now wait to see if they will have a spot in the playoffs.
