Mustangs Excited for Trip To Lincoln

Sumner-SEM looks to make the most of its trip to the Class D-1 NSAA State Volleyball tournament. The Mustangs are back at state for the first time since 2006. Coaches Tammy Kenton and Misty Freeman helped guide a young team that has just one senior into a big year as the Mustangs are 27-5. KRVN’s Jayson Jorgensen spoke this week with coach Kenton about this season and the trip to Lincoln.

As a player Kenton helped SEM finish as the Class D state runner up in 1980. This year the Mustangs have been led by Micah O’neill who has 349 kills, Allie Rhode leads the Mustangs with 342 digs. The Mustangs haven’t lost since the semifinals of the FKC tournament and have won eight in a row. One of those victories was against Shelton and the Mustangs had to knockoff two very good teams in Twin Loup and Elgin Public/Pope John on their way to the District title. They are seeded 5th and will play BDS on Thursday afternoon at 3pm.

Other area teams that will be in action on Thursday include in Class C2, Southwest at 7pm vs Oakland-Craig and Amherst plays Cross County at 7pm. In Class D1, Cambridge who is 29-2 battles Cedar Catholic at 1pm and Maywood-Hayes Center plays Meridian at 3pm. In Class D2 Overton plays St. Mary’s at 9am on KAMI Country and Shelton plays Diller-Odell at 11am.
