LINCOLN – The Overton Eagles swept St. Mary’s 26-24, 25-13, 25-22 Friday morning in the first round of the D2 state volleyball tournament. With the win, the Eagles advanced to the school’s third state seminal appearance.
Despite winning in straight sets, Overton had to gut it out in all three sets, in particular the first set where St. Mary’s forced the Eagles to try win the set on three set point tries. Overton would settle down in the second, leading most of the set by double digits and despite a late push in the third by the Cardinals, Overton would hold on for the sweep.
Natalie Wood led Overton with 16 kills, including six in the second and third sets. JoLee Ryan chipped in 12 kills and Daisy Ryan finished with seven kills. In the loss, Mya Hedstrom led the team with 13 kills while Lorissa Reiman finished with 12 kills.
Overton improved to 29-4 and will battle Humphrey St. Francis in the state semifinal at 11 a.m. in Lincoln. Listen to the match on KAMI and krvn.com. St. Mary’s ends the season at 28-5.
