    A pedestrian offering assistance in an interstate 80 traffic accident was struck and killed at the scene by a passing vehicle.   The Hall County Sheriff’s Office ays around 2:43am Thursday, deputies responded to an accident in the eastbound lanes about two miles west of  Grand Island’s west interchange.    

    A preliminary investigation indicates a Nissan pickup pulling a U-Haul trailer was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 when he was struck from behind by an eastbound Peterbilt semi.  A passenger in the pickup, 47-year-old Hector Stanley Duque from California, then exited his vehicle to lend aid to the driver of the pickup, when he was struck by a passing vehicle.   He was declared deceased at the scene.

    An accident reconstruction team was called to the scene to assist in the investigation, which remains open.

    The Hall County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Nebraska State Patrol, Grand Island Fire Department, and the Grand Island Rural Fire Department.

The eastbound lanes of the Interstate were closed from 3:06 am to 7:11 am during the investigation.
