Polk County wins C-7 District Final over Gothenburg

GOTHENBURG- It was win or go home Saturday afternoon as the 7th seeded Gothenburg Swedes softball team hosted the 10th seeded Polk County Slammers in the C-7 District Final to determine who would get a chance to attend Hastings for the State Tournament. The Slammers scored five runs in the seventh inning to win 7-3 in game one, and dominated in game two 8-1 to clinch their first State Tournament appearance in program history.

The first game went right down to the wire. Junior Courtney Sunday got things going for Polk County in the top of the second with a solo home run to put the Slammers up 1-0. Gothenburg was right back with an answer in the bottom of the third with a RBI double by junior Hannah Devlin. After a scoreless fourth, Gothenburg blew things open, scoring two runs off of a double by junior Wren Herrick to put the Swedes up 3-1 after five innings.

Polk County needed an answer and they got one in a big way. They score one run in the sixth off of an error to make it a one run game headed into the seventh, and then things erupted. Sophomore Savanna Boden and Sunday both hit two run home runs and sophomore Lindey Kelley hit a RBI double to score five runs on four hits in the top of the seventh to stun Gothenburg and win 7-3 in game one.

Devlin took the loss for Gothenburg in game one, going seven innings, allowing seven runs with twelve hits and five strikeouts. She led the way hitting wise as well, going 2-3 with two doubles, a RBI and a run. Sunday led the way for Polk County, getting the win also going seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, four strikeouts, five walks, and one hit batter. At the plate, she went 3-4 with two home runs, three RBI’s, and two runs. Kelley had a nice day in game one at the plate going 3-4 with two doubles, two runs, and a RBI.

Game two was all Polk County as they flipped home and away. Sunday would get the start on the mound again, and have another fantastic start. They got things going early in the first with Kelley scoring on an error in the bottom of the first. Polk County kept it going in the third, scoring four runs on six hits in the inning. Junior Emma Recker and freshman Adrienne Waller both hit RBI doubles and senior Roberta Hines knocked in two runs on a single to put the Slammers up 5-0 after three innings.

The one run for Gothenburg in the contest came on a RBI single by junior Hayden Ricley in the top of the fourth. Polk County scored three more runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth for some assurance, and secure the 8-1 victory.

Sophomore Brianna Houchin went 6.2 innings on the mound for Gothenburg in game two, allowing eight runs on fourteen hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Devlin went 2-4 in game two with two singles, and junior Addisyn Streeter went 2-3 with two singles and a run.

Sunday had another nice start on the mound, earning two wins on the day, she went seven innings on one run, ten hits with four strikeouts, three walks, and one hit batter. She ended up pitching 14 total innings on the afternoon in back to back games. Recker went 3-4 in game two with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI’s. Waller was also 3-4 in game two with two singles, one double, a RBI and a run.

For Gothenburg, they finish the year 25-7. Polk County will head to Hastings next week for their first trip to the State Tournament in program history.
