SEM Basketball wins two thrillers at home with Overton

SUMNER- It was a great night for basketball as the Mustangs of SEM got two big wins at home with Overton. The girls won 55-47, while the boys won in overtime 66-61.

The girls game was a rematch of the FKC semifinals, where Overton won 51-42 the first time around. The Mustangs jumped ahead early in the rematch, outscoring the Eagles 15-7 in the first quarter. The game then steadied from there, until Overton went on an early run in the third, and had the lead cut to two at one point. However, freshman Taryn Arbuthnot exploded in the third quarter with 10 points to help SEM pull away a bit and keep the game at arms length. Overton kept making pushes late, but it was never enough as SEM held on to win 55-47. SEM improved to 17-3, and will play 18-3 Centura in the first round of the D1-9 subdistrict, while Overton fell to 17-6 and will have 1-15 Bertrand in the D2-8 subdistrict.

SEM came out of the gates rolling in the third though, outscoring Overton 20-14 in the quarter. Overton would over an eight point deficit in the fourth behind 10 4th quarter points from junior Alex Banzhaf to send the game to overtime, tied at 55. Overton got up by 5 early in the quarter, but then the Mustangs came storming back thanks to 6 overtime points from senior Kellen Eggleston. Eggleston picked up the ball off an Overton turnover and hit a go ahead layup to go up 63-61 with just over a minute left in the extra period. SEM held on to win 66-61. SEM improved to 16-5 and will be at South Loup to wrap up the regular season on February 17th, while Overton fell to 8-13, and will travel to Gibbon this next Friday.
