The Gosper County Sheriff’s Office and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission responded to a rural area southwest of Johnson Lake Saturday evening for a call about shots fired. Sheriff Jesse Naputi says it was reported around 6:47pm and occurred near Roads 748 and 425. Shots were apparently fired from a roadway onto private property. Naputi believes it was a case of “unethical hunting”, possibly for deer. Naputi notes that Rifle Deer Season doesn’t start until November 12th. A special landowner’s permit is currently underway but he doubts the shots were from a landowner. Archery deer season is also underway.
Brennon Malcom was in the area at the time of the occurrence. In a Facebook post he describes a red Ford pickup with loud exhaust in the area at the time. He says he was watching a buck from his tree stand when the pickup apparently honked at the buck and then chased it down the road while firing 6 times. Shots he says were in his direction.
Sheriff Naputi says they conducted a search of the area but were unable to locate any injured deer or the people allegedly involved in the incident.
Malcom an attorney with a practice in Cozad, finishes his post that while it disturbs him to see people “hunt” that way, he is more concerned with what he described as “the complete lack of concern for where someone is shooting.” Meanwhile, the investigation continues. Sheriff Naputi asks that anyone with information to contact the Gosper County Sheriff’s Office at 308-785-2420 or Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
